چکیده

e present a simplified dual-channel discrimination model with spatio-temporal filters to represent the t s visual system contrast sensitivity, and masking based on local spatio-temporal contrast energy. The contras ensitivity filter parameters of the model were based on previous work. The masking and global sensitivity h t parameters are calibrated to masking data using brief grating target signals masked by a 700 msec grating wit he same spatial parameters.

Masking, information integration, and tactile pattern perception: a comparison of the isolation and integration hypotheses.

Two competing models of the effects of pattern element proximity, masking, and perceptual integration on the discriminability of spatiotemporal vibrotactile patterns are compared. Kirman's 'integration hypothesis' predicts that pattern perception is facilitated by a process of perceptual integration which requires that pattern elements be presented in close spatial and temporal proximity. Conve...

Spatial and temporal aspects of visual backward masking in children and young adolescents

The development of visual functions is very diverse. Some visual functions mature within the first year of life, whereas maturation for other functions extends into adolescence. The reasons for these developmental differences are largely unknown. Here, we investigated spatiotemporal processing in children (7-9 years, n = 15), young adolescents (11-13 years, n = 26), and adults (18-33 years, n =...

The spatial and temporal effects of lateral inhibitory networks and their relevance to the visibility of spatiotemporal edges

The response dynamics of neurons in the visual pathway are driven, in part, by the dynamics of lateral inhibitory networks. Illusions of invisibility, such as the visual masking illusions, in addition to the dynamics of visibility itself, can be explained by the actions of such networks. Here we provide a descriptive model of a lateral inhibitory network in space and time. We provide physiologi...

Space and time in masking and crowding.

Masking and crowding are major phenomena associated with contextual modulations, but the relationship between them remains unclear. We have recently shown that crowding is apparent in the fovea when the time available for processing is limited, pointing to the strong relationship between crowding in the spatial and temporal domains. Models of crowding emphasize the size (acuity) of the target a...

Orientation bandwidths are invariant across spatiotemporal frequency after isotropic components are removed.

It is well established that mammalian visual cortex possesses a large proportion of orientation-selective neurons. Attempts to measure the bandwidth of these mechanisms psychophysically have yielded highly variable results ( approximately 6 degrees -180 degrees ). Two stimulus factors have been proposed to account for this variability: spatial and temporal frequency; with several studies indica...
